The Papillon is one of those Louis Vuitton models that looks like nothing else. Its cylindrical, perfectly tubular shape breaks with the rectangular or trapezoidal silhouettes that dominate the world of leather goods. Born in the 1960s, the design reached a peak of popularity at the turn of the 2000s before becoming a sought-after collector's piece. This GM version — the large format — offers a generous volume inside this perfect tube.
The canvas is Damier Ébène, the historic checkerboard pattern that Louis Vuitton registered in 1888, eight years before the famous Monogram. The dark brown and light brown grid, sober and discreet, is paired here with chocolate smooth leather for the handles, round bases, and trim. The coated canvas is clean, without major flaws, and the leather is in good condition. The edges are in good condition with light rubbing, concentrated on naturally exposed areas.
Two flat leather handles allow it to be carried by hand or tucked under the shoulder. The zip opens along the entire length of the cylinder, facilitating access to the main compartment. The gold-tone brass zip pull is in good condition with a slight patina.
